When may an amateur station transmit without identifying on the air?

  1. AWhen the transmissions are of a brief nature to make station adjustments

Why Section 97.215 carves out a narrow exception to the identification rules for telecommand (remote control) of model craft. Instead of sending your call sign over the air, you attach a label to the control transmitter showing your name, call sign and address, and the RF output is limited to 1 watt. Every other kind of amateur transmission falls under 97.119, which requires identification at least every 10 minutes during a communication and at its end.
Watch out Brief test or tuning transmissions to make station adjustments are still transmissions and still require identification; low power or an unmodulated carrier does not excuse you either, since 97.119 has no power or modulation exemption.

An amateur station transmitting signals to control a model craft may be operated as follows:

(a) The station identification procedure is not required for transmissions directed only to the model craft, provided that a label indicating the station call sign and the station licensee's name and address is affixed to the station transmitter.

(b) The control signals are not considered codes or ciphers intended to obscure the meaning of the communication.

(c) The transmitter power must not exceed 1 W.
