Which of the following describes full break-in CW operation (QSK)?

Why Full break-in, signaled by the Q signal QSK, means the transmitter and receiver switch fast enough that the transmitting station hears the frequency in the tiny gaps between dits, dahs and characters. That lets another station interrupt mid-transmission, which is handy for breaking in with urgent traffic or for hearing QRM develop on a busy frequency. It requires fast T/R switching, typically PIN diodes or a fast relay, rather than a slow VOX-style hangtime.
Watch out Sending the prosign BK is semi break-in style courtesy, where you pause and toss it back; that is not the same as hearing between elements. Manual send/receive switching is the opposite of break-in operation entirely.
QSK = hear between the dits. Break-in listens in the gaps, not between overs.

What should you do if a CW station sends "QRS?"

Why Q signals are three-letter shorthand from the international radio service; QRS means "send more slowly" (with a question mark it asks "shall I send more slowly?"). If the other operator sends QRS, they are telling you your code speed is too fast for them, so drop your words-per-minute until they can copy comfortably. Its opposite is QRQ, meaning send faster.
Watch out QSY is the signal for changing frequency and QRO means increase power, so those choices belong to different Q signals; asking for repeats is QRM-related traffic handling, closest to QSM or "PSE RPT".

What does it mean when a CW operator sends "KN" at the end of a transmission?

Why In CW procedural signals, "K" is an invitation for any station to transmit, while adding "N" makes it restrictive: "KN" means go ahead, named station only. An operator sends it to keep the frequency with the station already in contact and discourage others from breaking in. It is commonly read as "over to you only" and is often sent as the prosign KN run together.
Watch out The idea that no US stations should call is not what it signals; that would be handled by other means, such as a DX station sending directional calls. Closing the station is signaled by "CL", and full break-in operation is announced with "BK" or QSK.

What does the Q signal "QRL?" mean?

Why QRL? is the standard Q signal for asking whether a frequency is occupied: "Are you busy?" or "Is this frequency in use?" Sending QRL? (and listening) before calling CQ on CW is basic operating courtesy, since the station using the frequency may be weak or working a DX station you cannot hear. A reply of "QRL" or just "C" (yes) or "R" means move along and find another slot.
Watch out The choice about keeping the frequency clear is closer to QRX or a simple request to stand by, and full break-in is QSK, not QRL.

What is the best speed to use when answering a CQ in Morse code?

Why CW courtesy says you answer at a speed the other operator has already shown they can handle, and the speed they sent CQ at is proof of that. So you match their speed or go a bit slower, never faster, and never faster than you can comfortably copy yourself, since they will likely reply at the speed you called with. Calling faster than you can receive just means you cannot copy the answer you get.
Watch out The choice saying 'no slower than the CQ' has it backwards, forcing you to keep up with a speed you may not be able to copy. There is no FCC or convention-mandated standard calling speed of 10 or 5 wpm.
Answer a CQ at the sender's speed or slower, never faster. You will get back what you send.

What does the term "zero beat" mean in CW operation?

Why In CW, your receiver produces an audio tone whose pitch equals the difference between the incoming carrier and your receiver's beat frequency oscillator. If your transmit frequency differs from the other station's, the two carriers heterodyne and produce a beat note; when you tune so that difference goes to zero, you are transmitting on exactly his frequency. Practically, you set your transmit tone to the same pitch you hear from the other station so you land right on his signal instead of a few hundred hertz off.
Watch out Operating split is the opposite idea, deliberately transmitting on a different frequency, and matching code speed or sending cleanly are separate operating courtesies with nothing to do with frequency.

Why The RST system's third digit rates tone, and letter suffixes refine that tone description. A "C" appended to the report (for example 579C) tells the sender their signal chirps, meaning the frequency shifts slightly each time the key is closed, usually from an oscillator or power supply being pulled by keying. Other traditional suffixes are "K" for key clicks and "X" for a crystal-stable note.

It closes out the formal message text itself, after which the operator may still continue the contact to send more messages or exchange comments.
