How can you make sure your station stays in compliance with RF safety regulations?

  1. ABy informing the FCC of any changes made in your station
  2. BBy re-evaluating the station whenever an item in the transmitter or antenna system is changed
  3. CBy making sure your antennas have low SWR
  4. DBy using only Underwriter Laboratories approved transmitting equipment
Why FCC rules (97.13(c)) require you to evaluate your station for RF exposure, and that evaluation only describes the station as it existed when you did it. Change the power, mode, duty cycle, antenna type, antenna height or its location, and the exposure levels around the station change too, so a new evaluation is needed. Keeping the evaluation current with the station is what keeps you in compliance.
Watch out Low SWR is an efficiency and equipment-protection matter and says nothing about how much RF energy reaches people; a perfectly matched antenna can still overexpose a neighbor. The FCC does not require you to file station changes or to use UL-listed transmitters.
Change the rig, the antenna, or the power? Re-run the exposure evaluation. The station changes, the paperwork changes.
