Why The NATO/ITU phonetic alphabet is the international standard used in amateur radio, aviation and maritime service, and it begins Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta. Using it makes call signs and spelling clear across language barriers and through noisy HF conditions, which is why the FCC and the ARRL both recommend it for identification.
Watch out The set starting Able, Baker, Charlie, Dog is the older US military (Joint Army/Navy) alphabet retired in the 1950s, and Adam, Boy, Charles, David is a US police/APCO list; geographic words like America, Boston, Canada are informal and not standardized.
Only one list starts with Alpha, Bravo. If it starts with Able or Adam or America, it is not NATO.
